How am I doing?
Today I met up with Clarissa, Matt, Nick, and Brendan, to interview Mr. Jordan, a science teacher at El Camino High School. I had some equipment malfunctions, but I was able to still get the main footage needed. I did not have my tripod with me, so I had to improvise with a pile of books and binders, which worked out perfectly fine. The handheld camera I used for zoomed shots and free viewing ran out of batteries, so I was unable to get some close-ups during the interview. Instead, I settled for doing a few close-ups after the interview. I hope those shots turned out right.
The big Relay for Life event is this Saturday. I hope to film throughout the 24-hour period and gain some additional footage for the site.

How am I doing?
I met up with Matt and Clarissa to do an interview on the phone. We met with Dina Dewes, who was about to finish up with her last sessions of chemotherapy. I had to form a new set-up and work with what I had, since it was a phone interview and could not physically film her in person. I set-up my laptop as a microphone and recorded the conversation as we used Clarissa’s phone to talk to her. As a precaution, I also used my digital camera to record the conversation. The conversation through the phone went well and I did not mind it had to be through a phone.

I met up with Matt, Clarissa, and Nick. We reviewed the layout of the sight and discussed our next actions. We hope to interview a few more survivors. We had to cancel on one interview due to some scheduling issues, so we need to find more people to interview. We still have about a week left before the event. We have a few people in mind, but we are not sure if they can do the interview. We also discussed the plan to sell shirts at the Relay event to help raise funds. I still need to raise my $100 to stay overnight at the event and prove I want to help the cause.

How Am I doing?
I attended the Relay for Life meeting at Grace Covenant Church in South San Francisco. I was able to meet up with the Spark Hope team and the other coordinators of the event. The main issue discussed was whether Relay would be moved to the summer due to one of the coordinator leaders stepping down. The consensus was that Relay should stay in May, but things need to be stepped up faster to get the event solid and going. I’m looking forward to participating in the event.

How Am I doing?
After editing, I had to begin rendering the file into a usable footage. I changed my settings so that it would keep the highest HD quality, yet not take up too much space on the computer for a small file. It took a few times to render the file to get it the approximate size I wanted. I did not want a big file more than 6g, even though my computer was capable of rendering a file that large, but I wanted the file at least smaller than 4g. With a 4g file, it would take less time to upload online, but still keep its HD quality. The task became frustrating, but I eventually got the correct settings to get the quality I wanted. Once the settings were just right, I created a channel for Spark Hope and uploaded it to Youtube.

How Am I doing?
I finished the second half of the texts. It was much easier as I finally found got use to shortcuts and getting things done faster. Though, the audio became slightly faster and it seemed the words were closer together, giving me slight problems with timing the text. I tried a new technique of making the words form an image. I placed words over an image and outline its form, trying to resize the words to fit the image. It turned out nicely after I faded the image of the logo and the words in the shape of a phoenix. I was not sure if it would work, but it was worth putting the time into. Overall, the editing went fine and I was satisfied with the content.

How am I doing?
Once again, I met up with my mentor at his office. I was able to go into one of their filming rooms and help set-up for a shoot towards the afternoon. There was a backdrop and chairs, but the important thing was lighting and the camera. We took out two large lights, that didn’t emit much heat, plus another power light to add depth to the shot. He brought out books and told me to sit on them to show how shots are balanced when one person is shorter than other. He showed me all the different cameras and tripod equipment they had. We set-up the camera and placed the appropriate memory cards, filters, and settings. I learned about editing, camera, and lighting techniques.

I met my mentor at his office/studio. His office was shared with his business partner and rooms for editing and filming. He showed me the sound booth and the equipment his company edits on. After watching two video projects and explaining the techniques and hours that went into the projects, one of his employees came in and began working on their current documentary. I was able to watch all the editing techniques. I was impressed with all the equipment set up and their fast processors on their computers. Especially with the set-up of the television connected with the computer, so the final product was rendered onto the television for convenience.

How am I doing?
I started the first half of animating the mission statement. It becomes tricky trying to match the audio perfectly to the timing of the entrance of the text. I also had to experiment and plan out different ways to present the text and make it visually appeasing. A few seconds of some text takes time to time out and key out certain frames. At one point, I started all over for a sentence because I did not like the end result. I tried it a second way and it came out better, but it took more time to visually create. I found it tiring and hard on the eyes after a while to pick out the little details get everything just right.

The topic seems to be broad; I may have to narrow down my topic to get more specific.

The team has posted our mission statement on the website. I decided to get more people interested or for those who are too lazy to read it, to animate the statement. This was a much more tedious task than I expected and I had to have some patience. Before I began to key out single frames, I needed the mission statement to have a voice. I have chosen my friend, Daniel, to read the mission statement as he has a nice and deep narration voice. I used my laptop to record him reading the statement about three or four times. After, I looked for a good instrumental to play in the background. I went to El Camino in the morning to interview history teacher, Mr. Arias. Clarissa and Matt were there to take pictures for the website. How am I doing?
Around 8:00PM I met up with cancer survivor Janet Werner and her family. I brought 3 cameras and my tripod. It was hard setting up in her house, due to the lack of light and slightly tight space. She was very welcoming and I enjoyed talking with her. The three other members of the team were also there to take pictures.
I set up the tripod at angle in front of her with the zoom settings close to her face for a warmer and connected scene, instead of a distant shot. I had one camera around my neck for free-hand movement. I thought the free-hand was very convenient because I was in control of the zoom and get the shots I wanted without having to stay in one place. The third camera was in my pocket serving as a back-up, since the second camera had limited battery. At first, I tried having my back-up camera as my free-hand camera due to its higher quality, but the zoom was limited and I had to adjust.

How am I doing?
I was supposed to record an interview with survivor, Mrs. Yee. Unfortunately, due to scheduling problems, I was unable to film the interview. I need to figure out my schedule between my other weekend activities and make room to interview survivors. I wanted to interview her, but it was mandatory I had to attend the band competition. Hopefully this is only one I will have to miss and I will have more opportunities in the future.

How am I doing?
I met with my mentor, Bryan, at El Camino High School around 12:00PM. We were at El Camino because he was the director working on the "Every 15 Minutes Video", which is an educational video about teenagers and drunk driving. I was introduced to his crew, which consists of a cameraman and a boom operator. Both were able to switch roles at any given time. He taught the basics of the camera and microphone equipment and the settings he uses. One of my tasks was to compile images of the students in the film for later editing.
After filming at school, we went to film at one of the student's house to get the "party" scene. He showed me the different techniques to get certain angles and how to set up a scene to get it close to reality as possible. Once filming was done at the house, we went back to school to shoot the "accident" scene. We waited later in the day to shoot the scene to get a mellow and darker shot to evoke emotion.

I left a few messages on some local video companies. I got a call a few days later and was able to get in contact with the owner of KM2 Communications, Bryan Kingston. He agreed to be my mentor and we plan to meet up at school. It turns out his company produces the “Every 15 Minutes” video for the school district and city. I will be able to watch the field work and get started on my mentoring hours. My biggest concern would be trying to balance my schedule with extracurricular activities, school, and the project hours.

How am I doing?
I am trying to find a mentor that has skills and knowledge in video production and making. I looked up many companies online, but all of them seem to be for profit. I may have to keep my mentor hours separate from my community service hours. I would learn techniques from my mentor and apply what I learned to my community service portion. I called the San Francisco Film Society, but the woman on the phone did not want to communicate with me very well. I wrote down a few numbers from video companies in the bay. I will call them tomorrow.

I may have to keep my mentor hours separate from my community service hours. I would learn techniques from my mentor and apply what I learned to my community service portion. I called the San Francisco Film Society, but the woman on the phone did not want to communicate with me very well. I wrote down a few numbers from video companies in the bay. I will call them tomorrow.
